NDT-BOBATH METHOD (NEURODEVELOPMENTAL TREATMENT)

The NDT-Bobath method was developed after 1950 by Karel and Berta Bobath, physician and physiotherapist respectively. The two introduced a new method of kinesitherapy, first for adults and later for children with cerebral palsy. The method quickly gained popularity and was applied in most cases of patients with neuromuscular dysfunction, making it the most widespread method today. In the 1970s, Dr. E. Kohn, a pediatric neurologist, and M. Quinton, a physiotherapist, added their experience with infants up to 12 months of age and high lighted the importance of early NDT intervention inneonates and infants.

The NDT physiotherapist:

  • Evaluates deviations and quality of motor functional activity.
  • Identifies the problems of gross and fine mobility with knowledge of normal development.
  • Prepares and incorporates motor characteristics that are missing or expressed abnormally.
  • Applies a variety of therapeutic techniques and facilitation aimed at the opportunity to experience normal motor patterns.
